Brand Positioning: The One Thing Most Businesses Skip (But Shouldn’t)

So… what is brand positioning, and why should you care before you promote like crazy?

Let me start with a real example.

A client recently loved one of our social media posts: like really loved it.

Their reaction?
“Woah! This might be my favorite post of all!”

We weren’t surprised.
We built the concept through storytelling and a simple metaphor to explain a tough technical idea.

The client works in technology, and cybersecurity is not the easiest thing to communicate.
So we used an image of a broken cable “repairing itself” as you scrolled.

Simple.
Visual.
Memorable.
And suddenly, even non-technical people could understand the point:

“If something’s broken, we can fix it: cleanly, simply, and strategically.”

That post worked beautifully.

But then came the important part we told the client:

“We can’t overuse this style (not yet).”

Why?

Because positioning comes first.

Here’s why we needed to slow down:

  • The audience is still learning who they are
  • We don’t know if they want to be remembered as “funny”
  • Their tone of voice must stay consistent
  • We don’t want people thinking they sell cables (yes, this happens)

These risks show up when brands skip positioning and jump straight into posting “whatever works.”

Brand positioning is memory.

If I say:

Coca-Cola — you don’t think of detergent.
Nike — you don’t think hamburgers.

Obvious, right?

But here’s the part most people skip:

It took them YEARS of consistent messaging to carve that space in your brain.

And in 2026?
Even more work is needed.

Because:

  • Attention spans are shorter
  • Every platform is noisier
  • AI-generated content is multiplying
  • Audiences are overwhelmed

And yet many businesses believe:

“If we have a logo and a few services, the whole world knows what we do.”

Absolutely not.

Positioning takes repetition (painful, boring, strategic repetition) delivered through different angles, stories, and creative executions.

If your business is new, you need one thing before anything else: clarity.

Clarity for your audience, not for you.

They need to know:

1. Who you are
2. What you do
3. How to contact you

That’s your “starter kit” for brand positioning.

People are bombarded with thousands of messages every day.
Your job is to make your message the easiest to understand and remember.

Not the loudest.
Not the most artistic.
Not the most clever.
The clearest.

Positioning also touches everything you do:

  • Your target audience
  • Your business lifecycle
  • Your strengths vs competitors (SWOT)
  • Your customer experience
  • Your tone of voice
  • Your design choices
  • Your storytelling

These are bigger topics (we’ll get to them in future posts) but here’s the simple version:

Your brand becomes memorable when you decide what you want to be remembered for.

Ask yourself:

  • What makes you different?
  • Why should people work with you?
  • What strengths can only you offer?

If you can communicate these things clearly and consistently…

You’re already ahead of the competition.
You’re already building positioning.
And yes – you’re already shaping what people will remember you for.

Food for thought:

Think not only about what you do want your audience to associate with your brand…
but also what you don’t want them to associate with it.

That’s positioning too.

We see this all the time: people start from scratch, hire an agency or a craft a social media strategy, and after a couple of months, they say, “We’ve been posting daily… but nothing’s working.” The truth is, this usually has more to do with what you’re saying and who you’re saying it to than…
