AI for Beginners: What You Should Learn First

The biggest mistake people make with AI? Asking it to do everything instead of helping you do your best work.

A Little History First

The idea of AI dates back to the ancient Greeks, who dreamed up “automatons,” or objects that could move by themselves. Since then, the concept evolved through brilliant minds like Leonardo da Vinci. The true birth of AI began in the 1950s with Alan Turing’s Imitation Game project – a machine that could think for itself. Now a major motion picture if you want to start there.

If you want to dive deeper into AI’s history, I strongly suggest this article, which offers a great overview of how AI has evolved and where it’s headed.

Back to the Era of AI Apps

You must learn how to prompt first, and be as descriptive as possible – don’t just copy-paste documents without context. Even AI can’t read minds, yet.

Think about a specific task you want to solve. Let’s say you want vacation spots for your next holiday. You need to write your prompt as thoroughly as possible.

Weak prompt:
“Give me vacation options for the beach.”

The AI doesn’t understand your destination, budget, dates, beach preferences, etc. For a detailed answer, you need a detailed description.

Strong prompt:
“Give me vacation options for Puerto Vallarta from September 1st to 18th. I have a $10k budget and want an all-inclusive hotel in a safe area with 4- to 5-star TripAdvisor reviews that offers small tours to key tourist areas or sightseeing.”

This gives AI rich context and delivers specific results.

How I Use AI Every Day

I use AI daily, including to create this blog post, and here’s the truth: I do 99% of the work. I feed AI my resources, ideas, Ideal Customer Profile, and marketing message, then prompt it for article ideas. This gives it huge context to flag off-brand elements or grammar issues, but it doesn’t write the whole thing for me.

When I first tried AI, I wondered:
“Is this just a smarter Google? Can I ask for things and get answers faster?”

Yes, you can, but that’s just the beginning.

What Really Makes AI Powerful

AI shines in productivity and content creation. It can:

  • Organize your ideas
  • Summarize long documents
  • Help you spot patterns
  • Turn messy thoughts into clearer text

My process is simple: I talk. I speak my mind (like I’m doing now), and AI turns it into notes and a summary. I use that as the base for blog posts like this. Without AI, I’d have to write everything, memorize it, and fight to keep my train of thought.

Here’s the important part: AI isn’t perfect. You still need to double-check, think critically, and use your own judgment for a finished product.

If You’re Just Starting with AI, Learn This First

Chat with it, throw your tasks at it, and ask for suggestions, but do the work yourself.

Let it save you time, but keep your voice, ideas, and decisions at the center.

That’s how AI stops being scary and becomes a powerful tool for your everyday life and career.

Why Posting Every Day Isn’t Growing Your Brand

We see this all the time: people start from scratch, hire an agency or a craft a social media strategy, and after a couple of months, they say, “We’ve been posting daily… but nothing’s working.” The truth is, this usually has more to do with what you’re saying and who you’re saying it to than…
